Hay Sushi - Spring Garden is a Japanese and Asian fusion restaurant tucked into a corner near Yonge and Sheppard in North York. The spot strikes a balance between casual sushi takeaway and a more polished dine-in experience, reflecting a noticeable upgrade from its earlier days as primarily a takeout joint. The interior feels modern without being overly formal, making it comfortable for small groups, date nights, or a relaxed dinner with friends.

The menu offers an interesting blend of traditional sushi and Japanese classics alongside more inventive fusion items, like their creamy miso pasta and a variety of sushi tacos—Salmon and Tuna Nori Tacos provide a fresh, balanced burst of flavor that's not too heavy or overly seasoned. For those who appreciate texture contrasts, the Chicken Karaage and Tempura Moriawase bring a satisfying crispness, while the sashimi platters highlight the freshness of the seafood, which clearly remains a priority here.

Patrons often note the quality shines through in every bite, especially the sushi rolls and sashimi, which arrive with a clean, fresh taste rather than being masked by excessive sauces or seasoning. The service complements the food well, attentive without hovering, allowing the meal to unfold at a relaxed pace. Ordering through delivery apps is swift, but the in-person setting brings out the depth of the experience with the atmosphere and plating.

For locals, this is a solid choice if you want more than your average quick sushi lunch and are curious about playful sushi variations with touches of fusion—think sushi rolls layered with creamy mayo crab or avocado-topped dynamite rolls that don’t lose their delicate balance. It's a place that works equally well for casual solo dinners and small group outings.

The best times to visit are weekday evenings when the pace is calmer, letting you savor the food and the cozy atmosphere without the midday lunch rush. It’s also become a reliable spot for sushi lovers who have found the North York scene somewhat limited, offering consistent quality that keeps regulars coming back.

Went here for a dinner with my bf yesterday and all I can say is that the food is immaculate. Yes, the price is a little bit higher but you are paying for the QUALITY of the food. The fish and the shrimp are fresh and flavourful (you can definitely tell once you take a bite out of it! One of the servers were surprised I was able to catch the difference and informed us that they bring them in each day and not freezing the shrimp). The space is quiet and simple (not during rush time service) so we were able to get a seating. Servers are great as well, just a little bit difficult to catch their attention sometimes when they are all near the counter area/busy and you are nestled at the far back opposite of the wall so had to wait till one passes by. Overall, will totally come back again to try their seasonals and would recommend for dates!

Found Hay Sushi on Uber Eats and tried their buy-one-get-one-free spicy salmon roll, it was ready in less than 5 minutes! The sushi looked great and tasted amazing. The spicy salmon was perfectly balanced , not too salty, not overly seasoned, and kept the fresh salmon flavor. I usually feel thirsty after eating spicy rolls from other places, but not this time! Really worth recommending, and I’ll definitely visit for dine-in next time.

A hidden gem tucked in the corner near Yonge and Sheppard. This sushi place offers fresh sashimi and Japanese food with the service to match it. The tempura appetizer was crisp and wonderfully prepared, while the sashimi was fresh and excellent. I do highly recommend this place for Japanese food lovers!

After moving out of Bc I been trying to find some quality sushi in Toronto, I can guarantee you this place has some of the best sushi I have try in Toronto. No only was the quality fresh but it really had some incredible flavors. The staff was very nice and the atmosphere very modern too.

Great and comfy place to enjoy the dinner with family and friends. It is really improved a lot since the COVID years. From a take out sushi place to a fine dining restaurant. Great transformation. I definitely will come back for more to try the rest of the menu.

A Pinterest-Perfect Sushi Spot in Toronto It’s my second time visiting Hay Sushi, but my first time coming back after their reno — and WOW, the interior is now even more aesthetic, Pinterest-inspired, and minimalist. This Korean-Japanese spot always feels cozy, and I still love their tacos the most. This time I ordered the steak taco — still so good, but I wish they added just a bit more sauce. They also added pasta to the menu! Tried the miso pasta, which isn’t very strong in miso flavour, but still enjoyable and comforting. If you’re into cute aesthetic restaurants with simple & soft interior design, add this one to your list

Came across this place last year and it is now one of my fav sushi places! We got one of the set menus (forgot which one) and the cold beef shabu pasta . The nigiri was very fresh and the pasta was very delicious! While I was travelling the past year, I would compare nigiri to this place, that is how good this place is imo! Staff was nice and quick with their service. Heard they renovated into a new space, so I am looking forward to coming back!
